In that election, he won the plurality of the popular vote, but lost the representative vote in the Electoral College. After the loss, he retired from the public eye for a while, but has recently been in the news again with his writing and the documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, based on a series of lectures on global warming that he has been giving.
