Asexuality is a fourth sexual orientation, loosely defined by a lack (or lesser amount) of sexual attraction or sexual desire. It is a vague term that may mean something different to each person who identifies with it.
The asexual "movement", if it can be labelled such, is distinctly different from the LGBT movement. There is little desire to change the world; it is a movement of education. Simply put: some people do not want sex for whatever reason and there is nothing wrong with that.
Aims
Understanding
There are several misunderstandings about asexuality, such as those defined in "The Top Ten Responses to Asexuality":
- "You hate men."
- "You can't get a man."
- "You have a hormone problem."
- "You're overly involved in your own busy life."
- "You just never had me in your bed."
- "You are afraid of getting into a relationship."
- "You were sexually abused as a child."
- "You are a lesbian."
- "You just haven't met the right guy."
- "Aww, did you just get out of a bad relationship?"
Asexuals simply don't want sex. They don't hate the opposite sex. Whether they could find someone to have sex with is irrelevant, for they don't want it. Hormones are only a "problem" if one is upset with the effects. Sexual abuse doesn't cause asexuality and is entirely unrelated.
Acceptance
The basic aim of the movement is for the general population to accept asexuality and know it exists as a legitimate condition. Perhaps if more people understood that some people don't have a sexual drive or sexual attraction, asexuals wouldn't be harassed, constantly having well-meaning friends trying to hook them up, etc. "Coming out" as asexual shouldn't be a big deal.
Promotion
These organizations and politicians promote and believe in education about and rights for asexuals.
