Ideas for a new Politics. If we want to improve the condition of humanity on earth, we'll have to bring together the peoples of the world to advance a common public agenda. The rewards of peace and prosperity and human cooperation are simply too high not to strive for them. The world's people collectively have a great deal of influence over their leaders. As more people are lifted out of a life of poverty and despair, that influence increases. We must find public leaders who act in the public interest. We must solve the problems of cultural diversity, short-term leadership, and control of government by specialists, bureaucrats, and private interests. Can we imagine a different kind of political party? One which brings out the public interest? One which runs an election with no dirty tricks? One that seeks political cooperation and consensus? One which considers national interests to be tempered by the problems confronting the whole of humanity and the planet? One which welcomes different points of view and practices fairness? One which emphasizes substance over process? One which brings relief to the victims of crime? One which improves the health, wealth, education and freedom of all? One which encourages the creativity of specialists but does not allow itself to be controlled by experts representing private interests? One which guarantees freedom of belief and expression? One which encourages each person to excel and contribute to society? One which explores the public costs and benefits of proposed acts? One which tries political experiments and measures their effectiveness objectively? One which provides a transparent view into the political process, with nothing to hide? One which avoids secrecy and welcomes public oversight of government and business? Can we imagine an open government which represents the people? Can we imagine a government which uses ideas to light a beacon for the people to follow to a better world? Yes we can. We just did. Can such a party win? We'll never know until we try.PowerofIdeas 19:49, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
