A Labour/Liberal Democrat coalition holds a majority of the seats in the parliament, with Labour having 50 members and the Liberal Democrats having 17. The Scottish National Party is second-placed, with 25 seats. The Conservative Party holds 17 seats, the Scottish Green Party 7, the Scottish Socialist Party 6 and the Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party 1. Independents hold 5 seats, in addition to the Presiding Officer, a non-partisan postion whose holder is suspended from membership in any party.

[edit] Changes to electoral system

Electronic vote counting will be used for the first time in this election, with the ballot papers being counted manually before being scanned. After this takes place, an overnight manual count will ensue, the results of which will be announced the following morning.
